Instructions for the Patient Upon Discharge

Warning Signs

:Contact your doctor immediately if

Recurrent bleeding occurs after 24 hours following the surgery • 
Pain does not subside despite using the prescribed painkillers, or if your temperature rises above 37.8°C (100°F) • 

Physical Activity and Personal Care

  • Press gently on the surgical site or tooth socket by biting on the gauze pad for one hour to stop the bleeding. Do not start spitting.
  • If bleeding occurs again later the same day, bite firmly on a clean tissue or on the sterile gauze provided by your doctor.
  • Swelling is expected within 24–48 hours and may be accompanied by pain, intermittent bleeding, and difficulty opening the mouth. These symptoms may last for several days and usually begin to improve within 4–10 days.
  • Apply a cold compress on the outside of your cheek over the surgical area to reduce swelling. Keep the compress on for 5 minutes, then remove it for 15 minutes. Repeat this process as often as possible during the first 24 hours while awake. It is normal for swelling to persist or even increase slightly during the first two to three days before it starts to subside.
  • Do not rinse your mouth during the first 24 hours, as this may cause bleeding to return.
  • Avoid vigorous physical activities and smoking for at least 3–4 days.
  • Do not touch or explore the surgical site or stitches with your tongue or fingers.
  • After 24 hours, it is recommended to rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (one cup of water with half a teaspoon of salt).
  • Do not chew gum, drink hot beverages, or eat food until the numbness wears off to avoid accidentally biting your tongue or cheek.
  • A follow-up appointment will be scheduled within one to two weeks, during which stitches may be removed if applicable.

Medications

  • Take the medications according to the instructions written on your prescription.

  • Only take the prescribed medications. Do not use any additional drugs that were not prescribed by your doctor.

Follow-up Appointments

  • It is recommended to schedule a follow-up appointment within one to two weeks to evaluate the overall condition, and stitches may be removed if necessary.
